Senior Data Engineer
Location: Flexible (London, Birmingham, Bristol, Nottingham, Preston, Leeds or Newcastle)
Salary: up to £44,646 plus an additional allowance of up to £15,000 for exceptional candidates (additional London weighting of £4,729 for those based in our London office)

We have already transformed our organisation, putting the public and best practice at the heart of everything we do. The work continues as CQC is undergoing a significant digital transformation. The Digital directorate will be overseeing delivery of our information management and technology strategy, setting out to overhaul our systems over the next few years. We are looking to strengthen our Digital function to deliver on our business priorities. Our core methodology and delivery approach will shift from a waterfall to an agile method.
About the Role
As an experienced Senior Data Engineer, you will design, build, test and maintain CQC’s data warehouse systems, making sure they meet business requirements and user needs. You will also be responsible for delivering services that are automated, scalable, reliable and secure while collaborating with partners across functions to ensure solutions adhere to architectural principles, industry best practice and meet the desired outcomes of the customers.
You will conduct analysis and produce the necessary outputs required to support the production of CQC insights as well as recommend ways to improve data efficiency and reliability, recognise opportunities for re-use and finally, optimise code to ensure processes perform optimally.
You should be educated to degree level or have an equivalent qualification and in-depth experience with working with Database technologies such as SQL Server, Oracle and Data Warehouse architecture with knowledge of big data, data lakes and NoSQL.
Specific Skills and Knowledge:
- Demonstrable experience writing ETL scripts and code
- Experience implementing data flows to connect operational systems, data for analytics and BI systems
- Experience developing BI reports that can be re-used (e.g. BI Publisher and OBIEE)
- Knowledge and experience of programming languages including an Object-Oriented Language such as C#/.NET along with experience of implementing solutions using suitable design patterns e.g. MVC
- Knowledge and experience of software engineering best practice including test driven development and the use version control software
- Knowledge and experience of automation technology to support continual integration and continual deployment such as Jenkins
- Experience re-engineering manual data flows to enable scaling, automation and repeatable use
- Experience of using appropriate technology and tools to extract and analyse both structured and unstructured data as well as Qualitative and Quantitative data
Additionally, understanding of NHS data sets along with previous experience of On-premise, Cloud and Hybrid deployments and knowledge of alternative BI tools, such as SSRS, Power BI as well as demonstrable experience of working in multi-disciplinary Agile delivery teams and Agile tools and processes (e.g. Kanban, SCRUM, Trello, JIRA, SLACK etc.) is also highly desirable in this role.
